Vidor High School Attendance Policy

It is the parents’ responsibility to ensure that all absence notes are submitted to the school. Parents, not students, are legally accountable for providing documentation for absences.

All absences are initially marked as unexcused until the school receives appropriate documentation that meets district guidelines for excusing the absence.

Upon returning to school, students must provide one of the following to be eligible for an excused absence:

  • A parent note signed by a parent/guardian explaining the reason for the absence, with the absence date.
  • Medical/legal documentation, such as a doctor's excuse, school nurse excuse, legal or court documentation, college visit verification, a copy of a newly issued permit/ driver’s license (must include issuance date), etc.

Important Guidelines:

  • Students have three (3) school days to turn in a parent note following an absence. Parent notes will not be accepted after the six-week grading period in which the absence occurred.
  • Students are allowed up to six (6) parent notes for the entire school year, which may be used at any time during the school year as long as they are submitted within the grading period of the absence.

After a student has used their six (6) parent notes, any additional absences must be documented with valid medical/legal documentation to be excused

Once a student reaches ten (10) unexcused absences, truancy charges are required to be filed in accordance with Texas state law. As stated in Texas Education Code 25.092, students must attend at least 90% of the school year to earn course credit. Falling below this threshold may result in the accumulation of seat time, loss of credit, or grade retention.

Parent Drop-off and Pick-up & Parking Permits

Parents can drop off/pickup by going down Melrose.  Turn left into the driveway next to the stadium.  Students are to be dropped off at the back of the 400 building near the boardwalk.

Students driving their own vehicle must obtain a parking permit. Permits will be issued to those with a valid driver's license and proof of insurance. Students must request a parking permit and pay a $15.00 fee to park in a school parking lot. So long as space is available, parking permits may be issued throughout the year.

Teacher Conferences

If you would like to speak with your child's teacher, please call the office (951.8900). Teachers can also be reached through school email located in the campus directory.

Cell Phone & Electronic Device Policy

In accordance with HB 1481, students will not be allowed to use their cell phones during the instructional school day. When the first bell rings at 8:15 a.m., students must power off their cell phones and store them out of sight. Phones may not be accessed again until the last bell at 3:50 p.m., unless explicit permission is given by a staff member.

If a student is found using their cell phone during the school day without permission, the device will be taken and delivered to the front office. The student will receive a discipline referral and be assigned appropriate consequences. For a first offense, students may pick up their phone after school. Any offense after the first will require a parent/guardian to pick up the phone.

The same rules and consequences apply to the use of headphones, smartwatches, or tablets during the school day.

IDs at VHS

  • Students must have the school issued ID in their possession while on campus.
  • A $4.00 replacement fee will be assessed for each additional ID after the original ID has been issued.
  • Defacing or tampering with ID will require a new ID and $4.00 replacement.
  • Having another student’s ID is strictly prohibited and will result in disciplinary action by the assistant principal.
